Contraception
and ectopic pregnancy
The use of contraception decreases the overall risk of ectopic pregnancy. However, if a woman does become pregnant when using contraception such as intrauterine contraception (IUD contraception), contraceptive implant, *progestogen-only pill, or sterilization, then the pregnancy's risk might be ectopic is increased. If a pregnancy occurs when a woman is using an IUD, an ultrasound should be performed to check on the pregnancy's location and dates.
All methods of contraception can be used by women who have had a past ectopic pregnancy.
